The Real Approach Academy:

The Real Approach Academy is martial arts training operation that caters for several martial arts disciplines as well as offering specialised ‘Self defense’ training (Self Protection). Founded by Dave Briggs, and with support from his associate instructors, deliver cutting edge training and the opportunity to fine tune your attained skills.

In 2007, Dave founded Gracie Barra Mansfield, to offer focussed instruction in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Associated to the world famous ‘Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’ organisation and training directly under Victor Estima (www.graciebarrabirmingham.com) – World class black belt and multiple champion, this aspect of the Academy is the leading source of BJJ in the area.

The Real Approach Academy is based just outside of Mansfield. The host venue for the Academy is Angels Gym, Debdale Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse, Notts, NG19 9NZ. Situated in the dedicated MMA area, this venue offers a perfect environment to develop and learn all martial arts and reality training concepts and skills needed to produce a good level of ability and understanding. This venue has a sizeable matted area, as well as a full size boxing ring and cage. In addition to this, it contains punch and kick bags, kettlebells, medicine balls and a host of other strength and conditioning equipment specific to martial arts training. The adjacent room is a fully equipped weights gym with an assortment of machine, cable and free weights, as well as cardio equipment. The reception offers a wide choice of drinks and supplements for purchase, plus fitness clothing.

The Academy current training sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, both from 7pm – 9pm. The class on a Tuesday night covers Mixed Martial Arts, basically split into two areas, one covering stand-up skills (Thai/kickboxing, JKD concepts, Shootfighting, etc). The other area is dedicated to grappling (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Shootwrestling, Judo, Vale Tudo). This class is predominantly 'Gi' but on occasion 'No-Gi' training is addressed. The Thursday night session is a pure Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu session. Additional class times will be added from the new year, including a dedicated ‘No Gi’ submission grappling class, basic/technique only sessions and a juniors class.

The first Tuesday of every month will have an area dedicated to reality training and self protection. This will address purely ‘street’ confrontational related topics.
