I started my martial arts journey after watching the UFC in my mid 20’s, I wanted a way to get in shape and it just seemed like more fun than lifting weights. Little did I know I would fall in love with it and eventually compete and want to pass on what I have been taught.
In January 2010 I made the first steps in my martial arts journey and found a local gym that did MMA and decided to have a go.
I did my first MMA class and instantly fell in love with the training, I was amazed that as a 19 stone bloke I was being dominated by lads who were almost half my size. In July of 2010 I decided to try a BJJ class to try and help my ground game for MMA, I never expected to enjoy it as much as I did. I picked up the intensity of my training after my son was born and was on the mats 4-6 times a week which helped with a huge weight loss (6 stone) and built up more confidence in general life generally.
In June of 2012 I was awarded my blue belt from Neil Simkin (black belt under Braulio Estima) after doing quite a few competitions as a white belt. Just after I gained my blue belt I had my first semi pro MMA fight and won it by decision, followed shortly after by another fight where I won by armbar. It was a great feeling knowing all the hard work was paying off in competition.
I have been lucky enough to train with some amazing martial artist from all around the world and tried to take some influence off each of them.
I have been actively competing since October 2010 when I did my first nogi competition and lost my fight to the eventual winner. I have managed to medal in some great competitions including the British open and the Nottingham open, more recently winning gold at the role models competition in stoke at blue belt. I am also still actively fighting MMA and currently have a 3-3-0 record fighting out of Team Kaobon under ex UFC veteran Paul Taylor.
I have been training with Dave since summer 2015 but have known and trained with him for a few years, it’s an honour to have an instructor like Dave. His knowledge is unbelievable and the way he explains things is second to none, it will be amazing having him behind the club and helping in everyone’s BJJ journey.
On 15h December, 2015, I received my Purple Belt from Dave Briggs.
